The Foundation Fighting Blindness Thanks You for the Ride!

Dressed in leather, Ride for Sight patches and year bars, the men, women, and even children of Ride for Sight proved again that their hearts are as big their bikes! Canada’s largest motorcycle charity fundraisers united again to raise one million dollars in 2007, for the seventh consecutive year! (Donations continue to flow in, daily, by cheque to The Foundation Fighting Blindness and online at www.rideforsight.com). Thousands of motorcyclists, families and friends from coast to coast participated in the annual Ride for Sight in 2007 to raise money for vision research, with the support of over 20,000 donors.

Since it began, Ride for Sight, nationally, has raised more than 16 million dollars making it the largest fundraising initiative for vision research in the world! One hundred per cent of the money raised by riders goes directly to The Foundation Fighting Blindness, which has funded significant research breakthroughs. Some achievements that riders and their friends should be especially proud of include:

• The world’s first discovery of adult retinal stem cells, an important discovery on the path to regenerative medicine and stem cell therapies;
• Discovery of five gene mutations that trigger retinitis pigmentosa;
• Mapping and understanding of hereditary eye diseases in families;
• Development of disease models to identify genes that cause retinal with diseases; and
• Gene discoveries in disease progression for macular degeneration
• Developing the world’s first patient registry for RP patients

Ride for Sight began 30years ago in Central Ontario. Since then, this great Canadian tradition has spread across the country, with rides in: Newfoundland and Labrador, The Maritime, Northwestern Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan.
