| Canadian
motorcyclists, through Ride for Sight, raise
funds for The Foundation Fighting Blindness - Canada.
Formerly, the RP Research Foundation - the year 2000
saw a name change for The Foundation, to more accurately
reflect the scope of the research into degenerative
eye disease that is funded by The Foundation.
The
Foundation Fighting Blindness has entered
the new millennium with hope and optimism. Important
discoveries about the causes of blindness have been
made over the past year. Scientists working at Canadian
universities and teaching hospitals are moving forward
with confidence in the quest to find a cure.
Retinal
eye diseases are the leading cause of legal
blindness and affect more than half a million Canadians.
These blinding conditions include: retinitis pigmentosa
(RP), age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Usher
Syndrome (deaf-blindness). The Foundation Fighting
Blindness - Canada, with the support of Ride for Sight,
fights blindness by being the largest private financial
supporter of retinal eye research in Canada.
When
the cure for blindness is found, and it will be, much
of the credit will go to the Canadian Motorcyclist.
The
Foundation Fighting Blindness was established
over thirty years ago, and is now the largest source
of non-government funding for eye research in Canada.
The Foundation supports Canada's finest researchers
regardless of location - and funds leading edge world-class
research. The grant competition is rigorous, and only
the most worthwhile projects are funded. Great research
is long-term; the Foundation was there at the beginning
and will be there when the cures are found.
